Located in Seville, Spain. Spanish language web site of the General Archives (English version is at http://en.www.mcu.es/archivos/MC/AGI/index.html). Repository of archival documents illustrating the history of the Spanish Empire in the Americas and the Philippines. Includes material from the first of the Conquistadors to the end of the 19th century. The Archivo General houses some nine kilometers of shelving, in 43,000 volumes and some 80 million pages, which were produced by the colonial administration. This includes documents of the Council of the Indias and the Office Secretariats, the Contracting House and the Consulates of Seville and Cadiz. It also preserves other resources from less important institutions, as well as those from private individuals linked to Spanish colonies in America and Asia.
