Ashe County, North Carolina War of 1812 Veterans
The men from Ashe County who served in the War of 1812 served in the 1st and 2nd Companies, of 5th North Carolina Militia Regiment (Ashe County). A total of 58 men are thought to have served in the 1st Company, but only 30 men were found to have served in the 2nd Company.

In 1871, the US government established the Southern Claims Commission to address southerners' petitions for compensation of supplies, livestock, and other items taken by the Union troops during the Civil War. More than 20,000 claims were filed.
