  The Motor Car Act of 1903 introduced the registration of motor vehicles, and required that registration marks were to be shown on the vehicle in the form of the licence plate. The responsibility for registration and licensing lay with County Councils and County Borough Councils. The letters in all Cardiganshire vehicle registrations between 1903 and 2001 are 'EJ'.
