The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, founded in 1869, is the oldest genealogical society in New York and the only one that is statewide. It produces the quarterly journal The Record and the quarterly review The New York Researcher; it offers education programs and partners with other organizations through the New York Family History School; and it provides a rich collection of online resources for its members. One of the principal genealogical reference libraries in the United States. The collection consists of more than 75,000 books, 1,300 periodicals, some 30,000 manuscripts, and nearly 22,000 microforms, as well as computer media.

Manuscripts and Archives Division
About 30,000 linear feet of archival material in over 3,000 collections. The strengths of the Division are the papers and records of individuals, families, and organizations, primarily from the New York region. These collections, dating from the 18th through the 20th centuries, support research in the political, economic, social, and cultural history of New York and the United States.

Established in 1898, the holdings include more than 433,000 sheet maps and 20,000 books and atlases published between the 15th and 21st centuries. The collections range from the global to the local scale.
