Founded in 2011, The Dallas Way has led the effort to gather and preserve the untold and under-told stories of the Rainbow Community of Dallas, through the collection and preservation of historical archives, the capturing of video and audio recordings of personal oral histories of individuals, the collecting and publishing of the written stories of Dallas-area LGBTQ organizations and members of the LGBTQ community, and the public speaking presentations of personal stories as told by individuals from within the LGBTQ community and by the many dedicated allies of our community.

Special Collections and Archives at the UC Irvine Libraries is working with individuals in Orange County LGBT communities to collect records that document their organizations, lives, interests, concerns, and activities.

The largest LGBTQ-specific archival repository in the upper Midwest, holding approximately 3,500 linear feet of material—including books, periodicals, grey literature, personal and organizational records, zines and pamphlets, artifacts and ephemera, and audiovisual materials. Although national and international in scope (featuring materials in approximately 58 languages), the Tretter's holdings are especially strong in materials documenting the history of LGBTQ people, organizations, and communities in the Upper Midwest, especially the Twin Cities area.
