The grand duchy of Oldenburg was bounded by the North Sea to the north and by the kingdom of Hannover on all other sides. It contained three distinct areas, Oldenburg, Eutin, and Birkenfeld. Today Oldenburg is part of the modern German state Niedersachsen. Eutin became part of Schleswig-Holstein, and Birkenfeld is part of Nord-Rhein Westfalen.
