In 1701 the area known as Mecklenburg was divided into the duchies of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Strelitz. In 1815, they were both elevated to a grand duchy. The grand duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz had two main land masses that were not contiguous. The largest bordered Mecklenburg-Schwerin on its eastern border. The smaller could be found on Mecklenburg-Schwerin’s northeastern border. Today it is part of the modern German state Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
