The Genealogical Institute of the Maritimes is non-profit organization established in 1983 under the auspices of the Council of Maritime Premiers. The Institute arose in response to a need identified by leading genealogists, genealogical societies of the Maritime provinces, and archivists for certification and registration of persons undertaking genealogical research for the public. In addition, the Institute has a role in upgrading the quality of professional family history research in the Maritimes.
