La Societat Catalana de Genealogia, Heràldica, Sigil·lografia, Vexil·lologia i Nobiliària (SCGHSVN) fou fundada el 30 de juny de 1983 amb el desig d'omplir un buit que hi havia al nostre país, on aquestes disciplines han estat generalment menystingudes per culpa, en part, dels mateixos genealogistes i heraldistes, més dedicats a afalagar la vanitat humana que a estudiar-les i practicar-les d'una manera científica i rigorosa.
