InstitutionalCemeteries.org is an attempt to catalog all known cemeteries in the United States and Canada established for residents of asylums, poorhouses, poor farms, prisons, orphanages, and similar institutions – in other words, cemeteries for the unclaimed. Many of these individuals were buried in unmarked or numbered graves, and many of the burial grounds have been allowed to deteriorate. Most of the original institutions have closed. And some institutions that remain will not release burial information to the public, citing privacy laws. Whatever the causes, the results are the same. The people who lived and died at these institutions are robbed of a basic human dignity: the dignity of being remembered, of being acknowledged as a life that mattered. And a piece of our shared history is lost.
