Fugitive Slave Case – Peyton Polly - The Lawrence Regiser
On the night of the 6th of June 1850, eight children of Peyton Polly, a black man residing in Lawrence Township, in this county were kidnapped, by a band of desperadoes, some residents of this county, and some of them of Kentucky. The Kidnappers residing in this county immediately fled to Kentucky, they were all indicted and a requisition made by the Executive of this State upon the Executive of Ky., for their arrest and surrender. This story was told by PBS “Finding Your Roots” when they researched the genealogy of the singer/songwriter, John Legend.

James S. Russell's an Adventure in Faith
An Adventure in Faith by James S. Russell of Nottoway County Virginia. Russell was born a slave, attended Hampton University and later founded St. Paul's Normal and Industrial School in Lawrenceville, Virginia. He was the first African American to be named Archdeacon of the Episcopal Church. The school still exists today.
