The United States Sanitary Commission Records Processing Project | The New York Public Library
Describes the New York Public Library’s project to update their holdings from the U.S. Sanitary Commission’s records. Provides a detailed description of the records themselves. The Commission's records on U.S. (Federal) Civil War servicemen collected & recorded information concerning the location of sick, wounded & missing soldiers for the benefit of their families & friends. Consisting of almost 1,000 linear feet of materials, they document the activities of the USSC’s administrative & branch offices, inspectors and relief agents & the many women’s auxiliary societies supporting the USSC. Almost a third of the collection consists of back pay, bounty and pension claims filed by the USSC on behalf of thousands of servicemen and their families during and after the war. The USSC did not work with Confederate (rebel) servicemen.
