- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2023This history is vivid, interesting and well written. As a life long Michigander I thought I knew my home state well. But I found myself learning many new facts. Find out for yourselves, too!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2019I used an earlier edition in college many years ago. I purchased this edition prior to an extended trip to Michigan after many years' absence. I found the book even more engaging than when I used it as a textbook. George May's revisions include many more recent references, a more detailed treatment of Michigan's native people, and updates into the 1980's. It is highly readable, very detailed without being tedious, and includes numerous funny and touching stories and vignettes that are like little windows into the past. This is not your typical dry history textbook, but more like well-written nonfiction from the bestseller list. Michigander or not, if you have an interest in how Michigan came to be, from the last Ice Age to the present, this is the one book you should read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2020Super book. Tells all of the history in a balanced informed way and does it in a way that is not pedantic or boring. I lived in Michigan for years and didn’t know half of this
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2012I purchased this classic Michigan History used as a textbook for my community college class in Northern Michigan. It was a lot less expensive ordering it through Amazon. No waiting in line at the college bookstore. That was 10 years ago! I do local motorcoach tour guides in my area and this history book gives me a solid foundation of information to use in my tour narrations.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2017This a scholarly book with in depth research written nearly 60 years ago and still one of the best on the State of Michigan. I still like Dunbar's famous line that residents of Michigan are to be called Michiganians not Michiganders as that would make the female population Michigoose.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2015It all began with Native Americans before the white European settlers in the early 17th century.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2016This is one of the best Michigan history books I have read! Years ago it was required for a class, but I have since reread this for enjoyment. I am fascinated by the mining and logging industries and both are covered in great detail. There is so much knowledge in this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2010I had bought this book because I needed it for a class for college, and as I started reading it I started to understand the drama of how Michigan came about-It was a rough road for our ancestors. The authors pull you back in time in a way that it is not just a history book, but it kind of tells the STORY too.
