This is a surprisingly large book filled with great resources for researching ancestors from Québec. Due to the initial date of publication, you will not find the numerous website links available today, but you will get a background of databases along with tips for using them. It is always important to research the nature of your source documentation, and this book is perfect for that. This book also provides numerous extra sources that can "flesh out" your research beyond the databases like PRDH (Programme de researche en demographie historique). I wish I had this book before starting my research, yet it is just as useful if you have already looked into the databases and books. I have referred to it numerous times already!

How customer reviews and ratings work
Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2016Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI was looking at the reviews for this book and saw that some of them are quite old. I have been using this book since it first came out. I have found it to be a great resource. Initially it helped in understanding the church entries, as well as, the dating and numbering system. Since that time as I have come across and started using the secondary sources listed in the book I have found it sitting on my desk near me for quick guidance. This book has become an invaluable tool in my Canadian Ancestry research. There are a lot of good tools out there for budding and professional genealogist, but this book should be on everyone's shelf when researching in French Canada. Don't be afraid to underline, highlight, and make notes about things you find in the book. It will help trigger things you forgot when you go back and re-read a section. Happy hunting your ancestors.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 25, 2009Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThe reason I originally got the book was to help me transcribe and translate some document images that I had. I don't speak French and the documents were written in older French script. The book provides sample documents with transcriptions and translations to help get the feeling of how to get information from French-Canadian documents. The book also has an appendix with translations for words with more than a straight translation, that is, some words have an expanded meaning for the genealogist and this appendix gives a clearer picture of document content.
I got a bonus from the book in that it provides timelines, history, and sources for other documents available.
This is an excellent reference for the French-Canadian researcher.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2022Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseIt’s got all the resources to help you find your French Canadian ancestors. Having it all in one book is great! This book should be right beside you as you begin and continue your research.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2013Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseI ordered this book to use for information on a lecture that I will be giving. It has awesome illustrations of common French Canadian research sources and how to use the source.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2017Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseVery useful research tool. Lots of helpful information.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2006Format: HardcoverWritten by members of the French-Canadian/Acadian Genealogists of Wisconsin. Covers the basic, readily available French-Canadian sources, most of which could be found looking through the FHL index for Québec. The sections are often sketchy. E.g. the "naming patterns" chapter touches on "dit" names and the Marie-/Joseph- issue, but ignores the significance of naming after godparents, grandparents, or other family members, especially for 19th-century first-borns.
There is also a lack of balance. A hundred pages are spent outlining secondary sources, while less than half that for primary sources. Given the equivalent ease of physical access to both from the FHL as well as the greater importance and validity of the primary sources, this is a distorted perspective. More space should have been spent upon the reading and interpreting the primary records. The exception to the sketchy treatment is the coverage of censuses in the appendices which seems to be a fairly thorough overview of the subject. The appendices also contain a nice French vocabulary. Overall, it's probably a good book for beginning/intermediate Québec genealogists, but nothing new or exciting for those who have working Québec for a few years.

5.0 out of 5 stars Historically enjoyable !
Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThough I basically knew early Canadian history, the book explains many things that I did not know. I am using this book to help me deepen my appreciation of my heritage as I am researching my family tree on both paternal and maternal sides. I am very pleased that I purchased this book.

Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseIf you have French Canadian Ancestors, this is a good reference book. The internet is great but sometimes a book in hand is easier to sort through.

4.0 out of 5 stars A valuable tool for researching your French-Canadian Roots
Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseIf you are new to geneology and researching french Canadian records, this book is a valuable tool. It lists all the resources available and how to access and understand them. It also has a section on French Vocabulary which gives the English meaning of many french words and phrases found in early French Canadian records. I highly recommend it.
