The Mississipi Gulf Coast has had its
fair share of hurricane activity over the years. Some have been mild
while others have been catastophic. Below is a list of Hurricanes
of the Mississippi Gulf Coast from 1717 until 1998. Those storms marked
with an asterisk (*) struck the Mississippi Gulf Coast with less than
hurricane force. |

Hurricanes Of The Mississippi Gulf Coast By Charles L. Sullivan,

The Storm
The second of only two Category 5 hurricanes to strike the U.S.
coast in recorded history, Camille originated as a tropical disturbance
off the coast of Africa in early August 1969. At 10:30 p.m. on August
17th, Camille made landfall at the Mouth of the Mississippi River
and moved in an eastward direction to the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Sustained winds were in excess of 200 miles per hour with a 20+
foot storm surge.
The Aftermath
The human cost from Camille was only the beginning, as the storm
caused more than $1.4 billion in damage (1969 dollars). The storm
wrecked most of its havoc in the state of Mississippi, which suffered
nearly $ 1 Billion in damage. The Federal Emergency Management Agency
(FEMA) estimated its relief package for areas struck by Hurricane
Camille at just below $100 Million, which ranks Camille in the Top
Ten costliest hurricanes to the agency.
