Maddox's life changed the day she read her real birthdate: May 17, 1820. Not 1990, like she’d been told all along. Sure, there had been clues: her mother's old-fashioned style, the fact that her parents refuse to talk about her grandparents, but she never could have guessed they were actually from the past. And if that wasn't enough, now she has to go back in time to live for good. She has descendants living now, and if she doesn't go back their lives will never be. Once she figures out how to go back in time, she struggles with the impending change her life is about to take, and her relationship with shy, unassuming Henry Yancey: the man she is supposed to marry. But if the decision to go back isn't hard enough, she soon finds out there is someone who will stop at nothing to keep her from going back, and he's running out of time. Will Maddie fall for Henry, and will she be able to make it back in time before the portal closes?

This book was written by one of my oldest friends, but even if I didn't know the author, I would've loved it! Sisterly friendship, adventure, mystery, a leap in time, a villian, and even a little romance all tied together with a solid narrative voice make this book a winner. I felt like I was right there with Maddie on her journey to figure out the mystery of her past and decide her future. That mystery is NOT predictable at all, and there are enough twists in the plot to keep you turning pages. Fast. The action just kept picking up--right when I thought it was about to plateau and wind down to the end, something else happened. I could not put this book down. Give it a try--it just keeps getting better and better...and better!

I enjoyed this book but would call it wholesome young adult fantasy fiction rather than adult. The genealogical aspect is more of a sideline, it's a time travel theme more than anything else. It does integrate some American history. Although I see it as young adult, and very " light", it was enjoyable as a change of pace. I understand this is to be a series, if so I will most likely watch for and read the sequels. The rating would have been a five star if "young adult" had been mentioned anywhere by anyone except the author herself.

GOING OVER HOME, by Katie Andrews Potter, is set in Southern Indiana in the present day, and in the Indiana of the 1830s as well. Maddie notices that her parents become evasive when she asks questions about their ancestors. A trip to Connor Prairie, where she discovers that the life style is oddly familiar, only feeds her curiosity. Following clues and delving into genealogical resources, she finds out more than she wanted to know. Can it really be that she was born a hundred years earlier than she was told? When she goes away to college, she discovers she has moved even closer to her family's past, and as she traces their secret journey from 1830s Indiana to the present, she realizes she has a decision to make: will she remain in the present, or return to the past to stay?

The title is a phrase from the folk song "The Wayfaring Stranger." While a work of fantasy, this book will awake an interest in history and genealogy if the reader doesn't already have one. It is a fun read that will appeal to youth and adults alike.

The author weaves a beautiful tale full of beloved characters, an original storyline and a historical perspective. At times I felt as though I were reading poetry. I haven't read a lot of historical fiction, but this story definitely ranks with the Newberry Award winners I have read. I enjoyed the cross over to the past and present, the glimpse into history and the perspective of a Godly family struggling to keep their values in present day society. I can't wait to read more by this talented author!

This was a great book. I don't usually read time travel books, but this one was intriguing. It got really good towards the end, so I would recommend reading it to find out what happens. Katie did a great job with this book.

Maddie never realized that her family was any different than anyone else's till she went to school. Her family was old fashioned and they never told her or her sister's anything about thier family. When she went to school, she got curious. Then when she went to college whe found out the truth, they were from the past. And her and her sister have to go back, but there is someone trying to stop them. Again, this was a very well written story and it changed my mind about time travel novels.

I think it was written by a teenager - very unbelievable. In theory, the plot was quite good, but not well written at all.

I bought this and read it all in the same day. Love it! Great book! Two of my favorite subjects, genealogy and time travel, in one very intriguing book. I would love to find that this story was truth not fiction. I would immediately go back and hunt down my Ancestors, and make sure they left substanial records for me to find ithis time around. I heartly recommend this book to anyone one who is interested in family, genealogy, time travel or those who have the imagination to believe that a journey such as Maddox's could actually happen. I will be looking for other books by the author…and I need to ask KATIE, is there a reason Henry is a "potter"? I believe that could be considered a clue.
