About the author

I'm Jimmy Fox, and I write genealogical mysteries set in Louisiana, featuring my rascally sleuth, professional genealogist Nick Herald. Nick discovers fascinating genealogical vistas at every turn of the meandering bayous of Louisiana and New Orleans family history and always ends up neck deep in weirdness and danger.
It's an honor for me to be a member of the Mystery Writers of America, Florida Chapter.
A little volume of poetry dedicated to our cats is now available (paperback & Kindle). It's called POEMS FOR PRECIOUS PUSSYCATS. That's our kitten, Aja, in the photo. I used to be a dog guy . . . until I married my wife, who has been a cat person since childhood. Now, I've got cat love bad!
Attention, fans of cat poetry! Another volume of poems exploring our obsession with our cats is now on sale here at Amazon. MORE POEMS FOR PRECIOUS PUSSYCATS has debuted!

- Reviewed in the United States on October 13, 2015It is so obvious that the author (Fox) really knows genealogy and the processes involved as well as the history and practice of the tribal/federal recognition process, tribal gaming and the tribal-federal/state government relationship(s). Fox expertly intertwined these historical facts/processes within the storyline to create a plot that holds you glued to the pages to the very end. You will find yourself invested not only in Nick Herald as a fallible human being yet expert genealogist, trying to uncover the reason for the murders, but, you will become invested in the people of this community and their history and how that history comes forward to affect their contemporary lives and relationships. An Excellent book!

I myself do genealogy but not like Nick …

- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2014Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI admit this book was not my favorite Nick Herald book. Nevertheless, it was still a rousing tale and definitely worth reading. The book dealt more with the Native American tribes in Louisiana than with our hero, Nick or his wonderful assistant Hawty. They seemed to take a back seat to the unfolding mystery instead of being in the driver's seat. Still always a pleasure to follow Nick Herald and his friends. Hope there will be more books to follow!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseWhen the Katagoula Tribe of Indians of Louisiana decide to open a casino, they decide to hire a genealogist to check the lineage of the tribe members. Of course they hire Nick Herald, and another exciting adventure begins.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2017Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI love The fact that that is was based on Genealogy. Some times a little too wordy and too much description of rooms, people, etc.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2016Format: KindleNick Herald, genealogist, is more crime, murder solver than genealogist. I finished it because I wanted to know what happened, but it was not among the better novels that I have read. I enjoyed his assistant, Hawty, more in the previous story, but she is almost nonexistent in this one. If you have read the two previous novels featuring Nick Herald you might want to read it, but I do not plan to read another if one should be written.

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI hate reviewing books that I couldn't finish BUT this is a real let down from an author I have enjoyed in the past. Nick the hero hardly gets a look in and the amount of needless description is endless. I well known author once said to me, let the characters tell the story. In this case they barely get a look in either.
I got half way through the book before I felt I was wasting my time and closed it.
Never ever let description ruin a good story, half of what is written here is not relevant to what should be an exciting genealogical chase.
Not my idea of Jimmy Fox's best at all :(

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read
Not as good as the American Ground but an excellent plot and believable characters.
