- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2014This is one of the most all around informative books I have found on the Cripple Creek Mining District. Own both the book and the kindle book. Is you are interested in learning about this area, this is the book for you.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2014I am a native of Colorado and found the book fascinating as my uncle lost his life in one of the mines. I have been looking for more history on Cripple Creek and this book was great.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 10, 2019Well written about the history of Cripple Creek
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2019The author's years of thorough research, plus her talent as a writer, deliver an extremely accurate and informative history of the Cripple Creek District. With expertise and compassion, she delivered a realistic view of life as it was -- challenging, unimaginable, exciting, and to be treasured. I have re-read the book several times, and highly recommend her work. She gave me a perspective of the life of my grandparents who lived in Cripple Creek during the "last Great Gold Rush." I highly recommend her works! I only wish the narrator for the audio book had been more animated in his reading it and personally prefer the printed copy as a reference book.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2023As an avid student of Colorado history in general and of gold mining in particular, I highly enjoyed Marshall Sprague’s “Money Mountain” (1953) history of Cripple Creek.
This book, however, published in 2003, must have been written with “Money Mountain” open nearby. Same vignettes and moments told in the same order, recalling many of the same turns of phrases Mr. Sprague used. Simple summarizations of stories Sprague told yet in less detail and with weaker prose.
“Money Mountain” beats “Cripple Creek District” in my opinion.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2017The title of this book is misspelled on Amazon. It should be Cripple Creek District: Last of Colorado's Gold BOOMS.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2006A neat book giving details of the early area difficult to find elsewhere. Jan has a great writing style that's informative and easy to read and her book contains many vintage photos with views I have not previously seen. I just wish there was more! Nice meeting you at the Monarch!

Victor Colorado
