Duke Family |
I believe the following man is the son of one of the below, probably B-4. C-1 James Duke, born 1770-1780 VA, died ca 1845 Hardin Co, KY, married 12-11-1804, Book 1, page 59 Washington Co, KY Sarah Chandler, born ca 1780, died after 1840. James Duke was a voter Washington Co, KY 1809. He paid tax here 1807 through 1826. He purchased land from William G. McCune 10-1-1824, Deed book I-214. He sold this land 1827 to William Edmonson, Deed Book J, page 99. He is the only Duke in the county in the 1810 & 1820 census
A-1 John Duke, Sr. born ca 1720 near Ballymoney in North Ireland, came to Berkeley Co, VA, where he was a landholder in 1764. John kept a notebook with the births of his children, showing the change of the moon. John Duke, Sr, born 1720 Ireland, came to Berkeley Co, VA. He is approved by DAR for rendering patriotic service during the Rev War. He died there before 6-16-1789. He kept birth dates for his children. This John, Sr, son John, Jr, and son William all show 1775 list of military paid in Berkeley Co, VA. The 1782 tax shows: John, John, Jr, & William Duke. The record of his furnishing supplies is found in "VA Revolutionary Publick Claims," 1775-785, Vol 1, page 119 & 127. His will of 2-9-1789 Berkeley County is in Book 2, page 32. It mentions only son Robert and daus Margaret and Jane. B-1 Elizabeth Duke, born 7-14-1747 Ireland, died 1773, married Mr Blue. Nothing more is known. B-2 William Duke, born 3-17-1747 Ire, died 9-13-1794, married Mary Ann Lemon (approved by DAR) dau of Nicholas & Christina Lemon of Harper's Ferry. I have his DAR lineage. C-1 Margaret Duke, born 8-18-1778 Berkeley Co, VA, died 10--1839 Jefferson Co, VA, married ca1794 Daniel Hendricks, born 12-10-1775 Berkeley Co, VA, died 1847Jefferson Co, VA. Part of Berkeley Co became Jefferson C VA 1801, now WVA
C-2Francis Duke, born 11-29-1783 Rocky Marsh, died 11-8-1836 by drowning at Harper's Ferry, married 11-20-1819 at Shepherdstown, VA Elizabeth Kendrick, dau of Jacob & Rebecca McNutt Kendrick, of Lampeter Square, Lancaster Co, PA. She was born 8-22-1802, died at Philadelphia 10-6-1869. Francis and his bro John went to West Liberty, on the Ohio, to visit kindred. While absent they were employed for a time, in building flatboats for the Ohio River navigation. Their mother and father had taken the same trip in 1791. They returned in 1811 to the Ferry.
C-3 John Duke, born 5-7-1786 Rocky Marsh, VA, died 3-31-1871 Harper's Ferry, VA, married 9-23-1813 Lucy Keys Talbot, dau of Walter & Elizabeth Shirley (French) Talbot. C-5 Matthew Duke, born 1-5-1791, died ca 1820, never married. He is buried on the Hendricks farm, where his grave is marked by a sandstone with the letters M. D. upon it. C-6 Nancy Duke, born 4-13-1793 Rocky Marsh, died Jul 1876, married ca 1818 Isaac Clymer, Jr, son of Isaac Clymer, Sr.
B-3 Francis Duke, born 2-11-1753 Ireland, died 9-1-1777 at Fort Henry, Wheeling, Ohio Co, VA, married Sarah Shepherd, daughter of Col David Shepherd and his wife Rachael Teague. She married 2nd Levi Springer Uniontown, Fayette Co, PA. She had two sons by her 1st husband. He is approved by DAR. C-1 John Duke, married Catharine Hoover. Shows as son on his father's DAR recs. C-2 Francis Duke, married Margaret Jackway B-4 John Duke, born 8-20-1753 Ire, died 10/11-4-1791. Killed by Indians. His will written Berkeley Co, VA 5-2-1791. He appointed his brother William as exc, with witnesses: Thomas Curry, William Duke, and George Lafferty. Will was probated 1-17-1792, with no wife mentioned, at Martinsburg. His brother William died 1794, his wife ca 1796. Who raised the three sons of John is not known. In the account recorded of the settlement of the estate of John Duke, it mentions money concerning the account of James Duke. Is this the son James (the minor child) or his bro James ? He was killed, according to his father's diary, about sun-rising in the battle of Gen St Clair. This battle is well documented. John Duke is listed as killed in an article in Lewis' History of West Virginia; and St Clair Papers. C-1 James Duke, born probably 1775-1780, (under 21 when will written 1791- would be born after 1766) C-2 William Duke C-3 John Duke, B-5 Robert Duke, born 5-4-1755, seems to have disappeared after April 1792, at which time he was the surviving exc. of his parent's wills. Some claim he and his desc are found in Cumberland Co, PA records. C- probably chi B-6Mary Duke, born 6-30-1757, died young B-7 Mathew Duke, born 7-5-1758. Very little is known. He was farming near the Duke homestead, in Berkeley Co, at the time of his mother's will. He served in the Rev War for Daniel Hendricks, the husband of his niece Margaret. He is buried in the family plot on Hendrick's farm, near Uvilla, about 1820. There is some difference between this record and the following. Matthew Duke, died 2-7-1835 Clarke Co, KY, married Martha. They moved from Berkeley Co, VA to Clark Co, KY, where he showed 1810. The history of Rush Co, IN states he was in LaRue Co, KY also, and the War of 1812. He is approved by DAR as being in the Rev War. His pension # is S1199. He served from Berkeley Co, VA in Capt Cuthbert Anderson's Co and Capt Charles Morrow, under Col Pendleton. His pension allowed May 27, 1833, while living in Clark Co, KY. C-1 Amos Duke, born 1800 KY, married Hardin Co, KY 10-4-1825 Rosanna Dunn, born 4-22-1803 Berkeley Co, VA. They moved to Rush Co, IN before 1839, showing 1860 census in Anderson Twp, p 588. Her father was William Dunn, born VA, died KY, and Elizabeth, who gave permission for her dau to marry. Rosanna Dunn was in Kansas after Amos died, as stated in history of Rush Co, IN, p 692. Elizabeth Dunn paid chattel tax in Hardin Co, KY 1823-1826 - only years checked. She appeared to be a widow. Since Amos never paid chattel tax in Hardin Co, assumption must be made that he had no taxable property, or paid tax in another county.
C-3 James Duke, born ca 1800, married Julia, per DAR records of Mathew Duke. They show 1830 Bourbon County, KY. C-4 Michael Duke, born ca 1800, married Hannah C-5 Mary Duke C-6 Martha Duke C-7 Hannah Duke B-8 Margaret Duke, born 5-13-1760. She was living when mentioned in mother's will 1792. When some of her nephews visited her, about 1830, they found Aunt Polly Foutz a widow with a son George. B-10 James Duke, born 6-17-1765. Nothing is known. Is he the James Duke mentioned in the probate settlement of John Duke, Jr ? B-11 Jane Duke, born 8-20-1769, married Capt James Glenn, of Berkeley Co, VA. She reported to be tall, beautiful Blonde, and intelligent. Her husband married 2nd after she died, but buried with her in churchyard at Shepherdstown, WV. Her 3 children died young. |
