The Geography Department Map Library contains a research-level collection of historical, thematic, and government document maps in support of CSUN students, staff, and faculty. The map collection is international in scope and covers the world's major regions with particular emphasis on maps of southern California, Los Angeles, and the San Fernando Valley. Patrons can find historical road and tourist maps, topographic maps of the United States, WWII maps from the Army Map Service, U.S. Forest Service maps, geologic and bathymetric maps, and maps from the Bureau of Land Management. The Map Library also contains one of the premier collections of Sanborn Fire Insurance Atlases in the country, including more than 4,000 detailed survey maps from locations throughout the western United States.

Legacies of British Slave-ownership
The Centre for the Study of the Legacies of British Slave-ownership has been established at UCL with the generous support of the Hutchins Center at Harvard. The Centre will build on two earlier projects based at UCL tracing the impact of slave-ownership on the formation of modern Britain: the ESRC-funded Legacies of British Slave-ownership project (2009-2012), and the ESRC and AHRC-funded Structure and significance of British Caribbean slave-ownership 1763-1833 (2013-2015). The National Archives of the Netherlands has the largest and most important map collection in the country. Most of the more than 300,000 maps are unique manuscripts. The Washingtons of Wessyngton Plantation
The Wessyngton Plantation was established in 1796 by Joseph Washington 1770-1848, a cousin of President Washington. By 1860 Wessyngton encompassed more than 15,000 acres and held 274 slaves there. Names associated with the plantation include: WASHINGTON, CHEATHAM, BLOW, GREEN, WHITE, WILLIAMS, TERRY, LEWIS, SCOTT, and GARDNER. I have traced all the families from this plantation (descendants of the plantation owners and the enslaved population). A detailed history of the plantation can also be found in my book The Washingtons of Wessyngton Plantation: Stories of My Family's Journey to Freedom.
