In 1800 the federal Bankruptcy Act allowed creditors to petition for bankruptcy proceedings against traders, merchants and brokers. This unpopular act was repealed in 1803, but documents in a case may date as late as 1908. You may use this search to find bankrupts whose creditors filed petitions of bankruptcy in the District Court of the United States for Maryland, the Southern District of New York or the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
