- Schedules enumerating Union veterans and widows of Union veterans of the Civil War (Family History Library Catalog)
An act of March 1, 1889, provided that the Superintendent of Census in taking the Eleventh Census should "cause to be taken on a special schedule of inquiry, according to such form as he may prescribe, the names, organizations, and length of service of those who had served in the Army, Navy, or Marine Corps of the United States in the war of the rebellion, and who are survivors at the time of said inquiry, and the widows of soldiers, sailors, or marines." Each schedule calls for the following information: name of the veteran (or if he did not survive, the names of both the widow and her deceased husband); the veteran's rank, company, regiment or vessel, date of enlistment, date of discharge, and length of service in years, months, and days; post office and address of each person listed; disability incurred by the veteran; and remarks necessary to a complete statement of his term of service. Practically all of the schedules for the States Alabama through Kansas and approximately half of those for Kentucky appear to have been destroyed, possibly by fire, before the transfer of the remaining schedules to the National Archives in 1943.

Ancestry.com has put images of the 1870, 1880, and 1910 United States federal census online. To access this data, you need to know the enumeration district that your ancestors lived in. If you do not have this information, you can purchase various census indexes from HeritageQuest. The HeritageQuest index will tell you the microfilm roll number, part, page, and sub page to look at. However, this information will not help you in using the Ancestry.com site. That is where this program comes in. By simply filling in the T624 microfilm roll number, part, page, and sub page that the HeritageQuest software reports, this program will display the Ancestry.com census image in your browser.

NOTE TO RESEARCHERS: Please be aware that a formerly "lost" rule for calculating Soundex codes has been rediscovered. This rediscovered rule is called the "Ashcraft" or "H & W" Rule. In addition to the existing Soundex calculation rules, add:
If "H" or "W" separate two consonants with the same soundex number, the "H" or "W" is disregarded, and the second consonant is not coded
The Soundex Indexing System web page on the National Archives site has been updated to include this previously "lost" rule. Not all of the links below include this extra rule. Use the National Archive's Soundex page as your definitive source.

- Indian Census Rolls, 1885-1940
Indian census rolls at the Kansas State Historical Society. These are the annual censuses taken by agents or superintendents in charge of Indian reservations. Information gathered varies by year and jurisdiction, but usually includes English and/or Indian name, tribal roll number, age or date of birth, sex, and relationship to head of household. Beginning in 1930, the censuses also show degree of Indian blood, marital status, place of residence, and other information. The original censuses are in the National Archives, and the Kansas State Historical Society has only selected rolls, primarily those pertaining to tribes with a Kansas connection. These are available for interlibrary loan.
