The Asian Division's collections are among the most significant outside of Asia and comprise almost 2 million books, periodicals, newspapers, manuscripts and microforms in the languages of East, South and Southeast Asia. Initiated in 1869 with a gift of ten works in 933 volumes that was offered to the United States by the Emperor of China, the Asian collections have become one of the most accessible and comprehensive sources of Asian language materials in the world. The specific aim of the Bureau is to locate and preserve archives, manuscripts and other unpublished or semi-published material through microfilm. It is interested in gathering material of historical, literary, or scientific interest to Pacific scholars which may be of value either now or in the future. Of particular concern to the Bureau are those documents at risk either from adverse climactic conditions, insect infestation, or civil unrest. It is also interested in preserving material deteriorating as a result of age or poor storage. Microfilming older at-risk records has been the moving force of the Bureau.

Much of this material was salvaged from the former Trust Territory Headquarters on Saipan, and owes its very existence to the persistence of former Trust Territory Archivist Sam McPhetres and his team, who were engaged in microfilming the files of the American administration.
